Walk-behind machines suit smaller or tighter areas and lower budgets. Ride-ons suit large open floors and long shifts, where operator time is the biggest cost. Most sites can decide on three things: how much floor there is, how much room there is to turn, and how long the machine needs to run.

## The main differences

Walk-behind

Ride-on

Best for

Small to medium areas, aisles, shops, kitchens, schools

Large open floors: warehouses, factories, car parks

Working width

Narrower, so more passes

Wider, so fewer passes

Speed

Walking pace

Faster, and the operator sits

Space to turn

Turns in tight spots

Needs wider aisles and turning room

Tank or hopper size

Smaller, so more refills

Larger, so fewer stops

Operator fatigue

Higher on long shifts

Lower; suited to long shifts

Purchase cost

Lower

Higher

Storage

Small footprint

Needs a parking and charging bay

## Questions that settle it

—How many square metres do you clean each shift, and how often?

—What is the narrowest aisle or doorway the machine must pass?

—How long is the shift, and can the machine be charged between uses?

—Is the floor mostly open, or full of racking and obstacles?

—Does the floor need sweeping, scrubbing or both?

## Compare real figures

Manufacturers publish a theoretical productivity for each model in square metres per hour. Use it to compare machines, not to plan a shift: turns, refills and obstacles mean real coverage is lower. Our product pages list the manufacturer figures where we have them.

GOOD TO KNOW

Not sure? Tell us your floor area and layout and we will recommend a machine, or hire one first to trial it on site.
