Lithium vs lead-acid batteries

What the battery choice means for run time, charging and maintenance.

REVIEWED 20 OCTOBER 2026 BY MARK SCULL, OWNER · SWEEPERS PTY LTD

Battery-powered machines are quiet, emission-free and suit indoor use. The battery type changes how you live with the machine day to day.

Lithium

—Charges faster, and can be topped up during breaks.
—No watering or acid maintenance.
—Lighter, with a longer working life.

Lead-acid

—Lower upfront cost.
—Needs regular watering and full charge cycles.
—Heavier, and needs a ventilated charging area.

Which is right for you?

For daily use or multiple shifts, lithium usually pays for itself in uptime and lower maintenance. For occasional use, lead-acid can be the economical choice.
