Sweeper or scrubber: which do you need?

A quick way to match the machine to your floor, debris and space.

REVIEWED 20 OCTOBER 2026 BY MARK SCULL, OWNER · SWEEPERS PTY LTD

The short answer: sweepers pick up dry debris and dust; scrubbers wash and dry the floor. Many sites need both, or a combination machine.

Choose a sweeper if

—Your debris is dry: dust, gravel, packaging, offcuts.
—You clean outdoors or on rough surfaces such as car parks and yards.
—Dust control is the main goal.

Choose a scrubber if

—Floors are sealed or smooth: epoxy, vinyl, polished concrete, tile.
—You need to remove oil, grime or spills.
—Hygiene matters: food, health, retail, hospitality.

Then pick the size

Floor area decides whether you need a hand-held, walk-behind or ride-on machine. Tight aisles and stairs favour smaller machines; open warehouses favour ride-ons.
